The Law of agency, insurance law, bills of exchange, insolvency and bankruptcy law and sales law are all important, and trace back to the medieval Lex Mercatoria. The UK Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the US Uniform Commercial Code are examples of codified common law commercial principles. Labour law is the study of a tripartite industrial relationship between worker, employer and trade union. Individual employment law refers to workplace rights, such as job security, health and safety or a minimum wage. The head of state is apart from the executive, and symbolically enacts laws and acts as representative of the nation. Examples include the President of Germany , the Queen of the United Kingdom , and the President of Austria .

Another example is in the 19th-century English case of R v Dudley and Stephens, which tested a defence of “necessity”. Three crew members and Richard Parker, a 17-year-old cabin boy, were stranded on a raft. They argued it was necessary to kill the cabin boy to preserve their own lives. Once accredited, a lawyer will often work in a law firm, in a chambers as a sole practitioner, in a government post or in a private corporation as an internal counsel. In addition a lawyer may become a legal researcher who provides on-demand legal research through a library, a commercial service or freelance work. Many people trained in law put their skills to use outside the legal field entirely.

Yet classification is a matter of form rather than substance since similar rules often prevail. Emory Law’s academic centers and interdisciplinary programs provide students with access to leading legal scholars in policy and research, in-depth seminars and conferences/symposia by renowned experts, and access to respected practitioners. As pandemic-related eviction suspensions began to expire, Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor reached out to other law schools to enlist their support in responding to a looming housing crisis nationwide.
